Hip Hop

Hip Hop Dance is a style of movement characterized by bounces and rocks executed to Hip Hop music. It has deep historical and social roots in African American culture, having emerged in Black communities living in 1970s New York. While frequently referred to as a singular dance style, Hip Hop dance is part of a whole culture of Hip Hop, that includes Deejaying, Graffiti, Emceeing, and several sub-styles of dance, including Breaking. Here at Rise Dance Company, our Hip Hop Classes are upbeat and we encourage our students to continuously develop and grow with confidence in their skills. Our Hip Hop Classes are an excellent option for dancers of all experience level.

Jazz

Jazz dance is no longer solely the domain of fan kicks and shimmies. The term “jazz” now incorporates a broad range of dance styles. Prior to the 1950s, jazz dance was a style that originated from African American dance and in the 1950s “modern jazz dance” emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Jazz dance develops in parallel to popular music, with jazz being the physical embodiment of popular music of a given time. It therefore continues to evolve and remain popular across the world and across age groups.

Rise Dance Company offers the opportunity for dancers to work through and sit the IDT Jazz Syllabus Exams. This is optional and does come with an exam cost.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.

Uniform Requirements: Students are required to wear tight fitted clothing that will not catch or obstruct during lifts/rolls , such as leotards, tights, fitted shorts. Whilst not compulsory you can wear any Rise uniform items to Contemporary class.
Shoe Requirements: No shoes required however students may find “toe undies” useful
Show Costume Fee: $60 per costume (Dancers keep costume)
Contemporary Pathways: Kicks, Turns & Leaps Class, Competition Troupes, Guest Choreographer Workshops.

Ballet

Adult Ballet:
This class consists of barre exercises that focus on alignment, timing, port de bra and combination exercises. The centre work will include elementary steps and simple jumps and turns.
Although this is ballet, the class will be fun and the environment a relaxed, welcoming one (perfect for adults). The terminology and techniques are the same but emphasis is placed on enjoyment, comprehension, posture and gracefulness rather than perfect execution of the movements. Attire – anything you are comfortable in but fitting clothing is best if you’re comfortable with it. Ballet shoes suggested.

Children’s Ballet:
Our ballet classes are similar to those you would find at any other dance school however examinations are not compulsory, they are available if your child wishes to sit them. Rise Dance teaches ATOD syllabus from Pre Grade 1 (Beginners) right through to Elementary/Intermediate levels, as well as Pointe Class for students at this level. All Ballet classes require a uniform.
